Built in the 18th century, the town is a well-preserved gem, with water furrows (“leiwater”) and beautifully preserved Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian buildings. Seventeen are listed as local provincial heritage sites. The Swartberg Pass and Gamkaskloof, also called “Die Hel/The Hel”, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prince Albert sits happily in the Cape Floral Kingdom.
