Area Info

Jeffreys Bay, often called J-Bay, is a coastal town in South Africa’s Eastern Cape with a population of around 27,000. Located just off the N2 Highway, about 75 km southwest of Port Elizabeth, it’s internationally renowned as one of the top five surfing destinations in the world. Supertubes Beach, known for its long, fast, and powerful right-hand point break, hosts the annual World Surf League event in July.

J-Bay became widely known after surfers discovered it in the 1960s, finding it more consistent and challenging than nearby St. Francis Bay. Supertubes can offer rides over 300 m, and under rare conditions, up to 1 km. The surf zone is divided into sections like Boneyards, Tubes, and the Point, with waves ranging from 4 to 10 feet (Hawaiian scale).

In 2015, the J-Bay Open gained global attention when surfer Mick Fanning fought off a shark during the finals.

Beyond surfing, Jeffreys Bay offers a vibrant surf village on Da Gama Road, a Blue Flag beach, rich marine life, and excellent seafood, especially calamari. Nature lovers can explore nearby lagoons like Kabeljous and Seekoei, ideal for watersports and birdwatching. The Kabeljous and Seekoei River Nature Reserves feature estuaries, over 120 bird species, small wildlife, and scenic hiking trails through coastal vegetation.

With its waves, wildlife, and natural beauty, Jeffreys Bay is both a surf capital and a diverse holiday destination.
