Area Info
Nestled in the valley below Van Reenen’s Pass and central to the historic Anglo-Boer War region, Estcourt is a sizeable town that, along with nearby Winterton, serves as a gateway to the majestic central Drakensberg. Originally called Bushman’s River due to its proximity to water, the town was later renamed after Thomas Estcourt, a British parliamentarian who supported settler immigration. Rich in history and natural beauty, Estcourt is near the Weenen Game Reserve and the expansive Thukela Biosphere, home to diverse wildlife including elephants, white rhinos, wildebeests, and leopards. The area’s turbulent past includes the tragic killings of Piet Retief and Boer families by Dingane’s forces, commemorated by a local memorial, and significant Anglo-Boer War sites such as the Armoured Train Cemetery – where a young Winston Churchill was captured – and Brynbella Hill. Visitors can still see the stone wall used by both British and Boer forces during the 1899 skirmish, now a national monument. For nature lovers, Estcourt also offers a variety of walking and hiking trails, including the New Formosa Nature Reserve, the historic Furrow Walking Trail, and the bird-rich Moor Park Nature Reserve.
