Area Info

Kathu is located in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, serving as a mining town strategically positioned along the N14, which connects Kuruman and Upington, and is about three hours from Kimberley. The town, situated 12 kilometres northeast of Dingleton (formerly known as Sishen), was established in 1973 to accommodate workers for a newly opened mine.

One of the fastest-growing towns in the Northern Cape, Kathu is located south of the camel thorn forest, despite being known as the "town under the trees." Originally part of the forest, which is now a protected area, much of it is on privately owned farms and land. Its conservation depends on the support of both residents and visitors to preserve the unique camel thorn trees.

Visitors to Kathu are drawn for three main reasons. First, the town is home to one of the largest iron ore mines in the world. Second, the incredible camel thorn forest, which covers 4,000 hectares and is a registered natural heritage site, is a major attraction. Third, Kathu is famous for its beautiful golf course, which sits on the edge of the desert and within the camel-thorn forest. Rated among the top 20 golf courses in South Africa, it hosts the annual Kalahari Classic and is the second stop on the winter leg of the Vodacom Southern African Tour.
