Area Info
Melville is a small, tranquil coastal village that is often considered an extension of Port Shepstone. As a modest settlement, it lacks its own shopping centre; residents and visitors rely on nearby towns like Port Shepstone and Hibberdene for retail needs. Public transport is virtually non-existent, and there has been little to no development in the area. This lack of urbanisation has helped preserve Melville’s natural charm, with the landscape still dominated by lush indigenous subtropical vegetation, including wild banana trees, after which the local Banana Beach is named.
Within Melville itself, there are two beaches: Melville Beach and Banana Beach. For those seeking larger or more developed beach experiences, several other notable beaches can be found nearby along the Hibiscus Coast, including those in Hibberdene, Port Shepstone, St Michaels-on-Sea, Uvongo, Margate, and Ramsgate.
