Area Info

Mossel Bay was officially declared a town in 1848 and gained municipal status in 1852. In December 2000, following the South African Government’s restructuring of local municipalities, Mossel Bay's municipality was amalgamated with those of the smaller surrounding areas, Friemersheim, Great Brak River, and Herbertsdale, to form the current Mossel Bay Municipality.

Today, the municipal area encompasses several towns and settlements, including Mossel Bay, Boggoms Bay, Brandwag, Buisplaas, D'Almeida, Dana Bay, Glentana, Fraaiuitsig, Friemersheim, Great Brak River, Hartenbos, Herbertsdale, Hersham, KwaNonqaba, and Little Brak River.

Located along South Africa’s scenic Garden Route, Mossel Bay (Afrikaans: Mosselbaai) is a harbour town with a population of around 170,000. It forms part of the Western Cape Province and is a key area for both tourism and agriculture. Geographically, it sits approximately 400 kilometres east of Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa and the provincial capital and 400 kilometres west of Gqeberha, the Eastern Cape’s largest city. The town’s historic centre is situated on the north-facing slopes of the Cape St Blaize Peninsula, while modern residential developments extend across the peninsula and along the bay’s sandy shoreline.

Historically, Mossel Bay’s economy was based on agriculture, fishing, and activity around its commercial harbour, the smallest in the Transnet Port Authority’s network of South African harbours. However, the discovery of offshore natural gas fields in 1969 marked a turning point, eventually leading to the establishment of PetroSA’s gas-to-liquids refinery. Today, tourism also plays a significant role in driving the local economy.
