Fable Country Stay

Fable Country Stay is a charming and historically rich guesthouse located in the heart of Curry’s Post, in the scenic KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Once a vital trading post between Durban and Johannesburg, this unique property has been lovingly restored to offer guests a warm, welcoming escape that blends rustic heritage with modern comforts. Fable Country Stay holds a rich history dating back to the days when it served as a bustling trading post between Durban and Johannesburg. In many of the old photographs, you can still see donkey carts and horse-drawn wagons gathered outside the main building, a charming reminder of a bygone era. When our family stumbled upon this hidden gem in 2012, it had stood empty for many years. Intrigued by its character and curious about its past, we began uncovering the history of the house and the land it rests on. We soon discovered that this property once belonged to the Curry family, after whom Curry’s Post is named. The house evolved, first an old hotel and post office, then a cherished family home where generations of Currys lived and grew up. Their deep connection to the land is woven into the very foundations of the property. We carefully restored the home, preserving much of its original charm and history, including the kitchen’s old fireplace, which we imagine was the heart of the house during the chilly Midlands winters. The iron pot now hanging above the hearth was found just as it is, a timeless relic from another chapter in its story. Today, the restored buildings have been thoughtfully converted into warm and inviting self-catering accommodation. The original farmhouse is now known as the Fable Farmhouse and sleeps up to 7 guests in three double bedrooms and a single room, ideal for families or small groups. Nestled in the garden are two charming cottages. Pelican Cottage, a romantic retreat featuring a fully equipped kitchen, a king-size bed, and an en-suite bathroom, is perfect for couples or as overflow for larger groups and Flamingo Cottage, a cosy space for two with a queen-size bed, tastefully restored for comfort and style. Guests can enjoy the convenience of an on-site restaurant serving locally inspired meals, perfect for relaxed dining without leaving the property. Families will also appreciate the dedicated children’s play area, offering a safe and fun space for little ones to run around and enjoy the outdoors. We also provide a special setting for private functions and pre-wedding events. Let us host your rehearsal dinner in our spacious garden or on the verandah, whether you prefer a relaxed braai and bonfire evening, a cocktail gathering, or an intimate sit-down meal. We’ll work with you to design an evening that suits your style and budget, then take care of the rest so you can relax and enjoy the occasion with your loved ones. The Fable Farmhouse is also the perfect place to get ready for your big day. Whether it’s the bride and her bridal party or the groom and his groomsmen, the house offers ample space for hair, makeup, photography, and guests coming and going. We'll gladly set up a lovely breakfast for you and your team while you prepare. And if you're staying with us on your wedding night, we’ll prepare a private and romantic room for you, the perfect way to end a beautiful celebration. At Fable, we also invite guests to enjoy a humble yet heartfelt eating experience. Our food philosophy is all about simple and honest food, back to basics, done really well. We serve real food in its most natural form: full of flavour, delicately presented, and inspired by the changing seasons. Much of what we serve is grown right here at Fable or sourced from carefully selected local suppliers in the Midlands. Our menu reflects what we love to eat, ishes that are colourful like our gardens, comforting yet elevated, and always designed to make guests feel both at home and a little spoiled. The atmosphere we’ve created is serene yet vibrant, with the soothing sound of flowing water, the scent of fresh coffee, and a space that encourages you to slow down and savour the moment. Please note that seating is limited, and advanced booking is essential for group dining. Adjacent to the dining area, the Fable Gardens have been thoughtfully landscaped with the playfully minded in mind. Filled with secret corners, tunnels, and even a maze, the garden offers an immersive sensory experience. Guests are encouraged to explore, interact with nature, and rediscover the joy of touch, smell, sound, taste, and sight. It’s an ideal space for families, curious wanderers, or anyone wanting to reconnect with the simplicity of the outdoors. Surrounded by rolling hills, open farmland, and nearby forests, Fable Country Stay is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a peaceful retreat where guests can unwind, explore the countryside, and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or an extended stay, you’ll feel right at home. With inviting interiors, thoughtful touches, and easy access to local restaurants, nature reserves, and the Midlands Meander, Fable is the perfect base for couples, families, and friends looking to enjoy the charm and tranquillity of the Midlands.
