Area Info
Sasolburg is a city located in the northern region of South Africa’s Free State province. It serves as the administrative centre of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality.
Situated just 13 kilometres south of Gauteng, Sasolburg forms part of the Vaal Triangle, an industrial region that includes Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, and Sasolburg.
Established in 1954, Sasolburg was originally developed to provide housing and amenities for employees of Sasol, the South African energy and chemical company. The first facility, known as Sasol 1, was a pilot project aimed at converting coal into oil, due to the country’s lack of natural petroleum reserves. Given South Africa's abundant coal deposits, this initiative was viable and strategic.
Located at a high altitude, Sasolburg experiences a relatively dry climate with significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. The city lies along the banks of the Vaal River, which marks the boundary between the Free State and the former Transvaal Province. Nearby, the Vaal Dam offers excellent conditions for windsurfing and other water sports.
