Lephalale, previously called Ellisras, is a coal mining town located in South Africa's Limpopo province, just east of the Waterberg Coalfield. Originally established in 1960 as Ellisras, the town was named after Patrick Ellis and Piet Erasmus, who settled on a local farm during the 1930s. In 2002, the Limpopo provincial government renamed the town Lephalale, taking its name from the primary river that runs through the municipality. The name "Lephalale" comes from the Setswana language and means "to flow."
