Area Info

Hout Bay is a coastal suburb of Cape Town, located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Nestled in a valley along the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula, it lies approximately 20 kilometres south of Cape Town’s city centre. The name "Hout Bay," meaning "Wood Bay" in Afrikaans, can refer to the bay itself, the surrounding valley, or the town.

Originally consisting of two farms, the area gradually developed into a residential suburb as land was divided for urban expansion. Hout Bay is bordered by mountains on three sides and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. To the north lies Table Mountain National Park, including the Orangekloof Nature Reserve, while the Twelve Apostles range, Little Lion's Head, Karbonkelberg, and other peaks form natural boundaries on the west and east. One of the area's most scenic routes, Chapman's Peak Drive, is carved into the mountainside and connects Hout Bay with Noordhoek and Cape Point.

The bay features a sandy beach that draws both tourists and locals. It also has one of the busiest fishing harbours in the region, supporting commercial fishing activities such as tuna, snoek, and crayfish. The harbour hosts the Hout Bay Yacht Club, restaurants, and fish markets, making it a vibrant hub for both industry and leisure.

Access to Hout Bay is via three mountain passes: one leads through Suikerbossie to Camps Bay and Llandudno, another is Chapman's Peak Drive to Noordhoek, and the third crosses Constantia Nek to reach Constantia.

Hout Bay retains the charm of a historic fishing village and offers various accommodations, from hotels to bed-and-breakfasts. Its harbour area is popular for fresh seafood, artisanal goods, and boat trips to nearby Duiker Island. Chapman's Peak Drive is a major scenic attraction, and the nearby East and West forts, dating back to the 18th century, remain open to visitors, with the East Fort still operating its original cannons.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore numerous hiking trails in the surrounding mountains. A bronze leopard statue watches over the coastline from a rock, serving as a unique landmark.
