Schaefer’s Halt is a peaceful countryside escape in the Dullstroom area, offering four private self-catering cottages surrounded by wide-open views, rolling hills, and fresh mountain air. Guests can enjoy on-site hiking trails, tranquil picnic spots, birdwatching, and excellent fly-fishing in our stocked trout ponds. Each cottage is separate, charming, and fully equipped — with fireplaces, braai areas, and everything you need for a quiet, restorative getaway. Perfect for couples, families, nature lovers, and anyone looking to slow down and breathe again.

Schaefer’s Halt is perfectly positioned halfway between Dullstroom and Lydenburg, offering guests peaceful countryside living with easy access to two of Mpumalanga’s most charming towns. The farm is located 25 km from Dullstroom, the nearest village for restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, fly-fishing shops, groceries, and general supplies.
To the opposite side lies Lydenburg (Mashishing), nestled at the foothills of the Long Tom Pass — one of South Africa’s most scenic mountain routes. Lydenburg offers convenient shopping, fuel, medical facilities, and cultural attractions such as the Lydenburg Museum, known for the famous Lydenburg Heads (some of the earliest Iron Age artefacts discovered in Southern Africa).

The Snug, is a romantic cottage for 2, overlooking the vegetable garden. The unit has 1 bedroom, a small kitchenette and a bathroom with a Victorian claw-foot bath. Regrettably, no pets are allowed in this unit. BBQ on the covered verandah.
Windsong
Guests: 4
The Windsong, is a private cottage with 2 bedrooms and can accommodate 4 guests. The main bedroom has a queen-size bed and there are 2 single beds in the second bedroom. One shared bathroom and well equipped kitchen.
Cloud Cottage
Guests: 5
The Cloud Cottage can accommodate a total of 6 guests, ideal for a large family. The main bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom has two single beds with an adjoining kid's room with bunk beds and a shared bathroom. Well equipped kitchen.
The Cosy
Guests: 4
The Cosy has 2 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, an open-plan lounge, a dining room and a kitchen as well as a fireplace. This unit is in close proximity to the main house. The unit is accessible to wheelchairs, but no pets are allowed.
