Founded in 1879, Umtata is located on the banks of the Mtata River and was once the capital of the Transkei, the Xhosa homeland during the Apartheid era. It is called after the Sneezewood (umtati) trees, which are well-known for their wood and medicinal qualities. Umtata remains the region's centre, and Transkei is now a part of the Eastern Cape.
