Area Info

Mtunzini is a tranquil coastal village known as “the place of shade.” Perched on a hill with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, the town is surrounded by unspoiled dune forests, a pristine estuary, and a rich mangrove ecosystem.

Recognised for its exceptional environmental efforts, Mtunzini was officially declared a Conservancy in 1995 and has earned multiple awards, including a Conservation Award and a Green Trust accolade, for its dedication to preserving natural habitats. The town’s streets are lined with indigenous trees, creating a lush environment that supports a wide range of birdlife.

Mtunzini is one of the few places in South Africa where visitors can spot the rare Palmnut Vulture — the country’s rarest breeding bird of prey. Drawn to the area by the towering Raphia palms, which provide vital food and nesting sites, three to five breeding pairs call Mtunzini home, making it a must-visit destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

The name "Mtunzini" comes from the Zulu word Emthunzini, meaning “in the shade of the umthunzi tree.” It references a historic Milkwood tree once frequented by John Dunn, a 19th-century diplomat to King Cetshwayo, who was granted the land that would become present-day Mtunzini.
Over the years, the town has undertaken significant conservation work, including removing invasive species and restoring native forests. Today, Mtunzini offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and peaceful charm — an ideal retreat for eco-conscious travellers seeking a connection with nature.
