Mountain View Eco Lodge Montagu

Mountain View Eco Lodge Montagu sits high on the slopes above town, right on the edge of the Kanonkop Reserve. Built in 2013 on a property known as Hooggenoeg (“high enough”), the lodge blends the quiet simplicity of European monasteries with the warmth of African design. Privacy and peace are at the heart of the experience here. Hidden from the street and monitored 24 hours a day, the lodge offers a secure and tranquil retreat with sweeping views over the mountains and Montagu’s town center, which is just a short walk away. This eco-award-winning lodge features seven individually styled rooms, all with garden views. Each room offers a king-size bed, fan, dressing table, safe, and a private bathroom with shower and complimentary toiletries. Two rooms can be connected to create a spacious family room for up to four people. Guests can relax at the seasonal heated outdoor pool and sun deck, with views across the valley, or enjoy a meal at the Belgian Restaurant, serving a mix of Belgian classics and South African favorites (by reservation). The cozy bar offers an excellent selection of Belgian, imported, and local beers, along with fine wines from the region. Nearby, visitors can explore the wine farms of Route 62, join a river trip on the authentic River Goose, hike or cycle the mountain trails, or play a round at Montagu Golf Course, just 4 minutes away. The Montagu Hot Springs are only 2 km from the lodge, and Robertson’s wine estates are less than 30 km. Chauffeur-driven tours can also be arranged, from wine tasting and off-road adventures to Big 5 game drives and city excursions. Free Wi-Fi and private parking are available. Mountain View Eco Lodge is proudly registered as an eco-accommodation, recognized with several awards for sustainability. Water from showers and basins is filtered and reused for irrigation and flushing, tumble dryers are avoided to save energy, and all laundry is done with eco-friendly detergents. The rooms are naturally insulated, with a clever airflow system that keeps temperatures comfortable—without the need for air conditioning.

Area Info

To the south, just a two-hour drive takes you into the scenic Boland towards Cape Town. Head north for 40 minutes towards Barrydale, and you’ll enter the Little Karoo’s “Fruit Pantry of South Africa.” Travel east to the N1 (about 45 minutes) to experience the vast open spaces of the Great Karoo. A trip to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, takes roughly an hour, and along the Overberg coast you can enjoy whale watching in season.

Nestled between the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountains, Montagu is the perfect halfway stop between Cape Town and the Garden Route. The village offers charm, history, and easy access to the Robertson Wine Route—arguably one of South Africa’s best-kept secrets. Unlike the more well-known routes near Cape Town, here you can taste wine on a floating barge, enjoy sundowners on the river, or even have dinner while drifting quietly downstream.
